Erik is an experienced peak-bagger, long-distance hiker, author (of seven books), and has immense amounts of knowledge about off-trail travel and wilderness adventuring, especially in the northeast of America. He has climbed over 200 remote peaks in the Adirondacks during winter, with many of them not having a trail to the summit. He’s an expert in toponym research (why things are named what they are) and sustainable trail design.

All this knowledge and skill has led him to achieve what many outdoor enthusiasts can only dream, create his own thru-hiking route; the Trans Adirondack, a 235-mile backpacking route in the Adirondack mountains that includes off-trail navigation and bushwacking. It’s broken down like this, 182 miles of trails (76%), 50 miles of roads (21%), and 8 miles of trackless woods (3%) to get from one end of the Adirondack Park to the other.

His knowledge is vast, his demeanor unassuming, and his attitude superb. I hope you’re as inspired as I am after this conversation with a truly humble legend of trail-travel and development.

Long before her son was doing some of the most incredible climbing in the world and her daughter was solo bike touring around the west, Dierdre was living a life full of adventure. From moving to different countries and starting orchestras from scratch to raising two kids by herself and working much more than fulltime, Dierdre enjoyed taking on out-of-the-box challenges and seeing what she’s made of.

Never to be one to think of age as a limitation, Dierdre started running at the age of 55 and became climbing at 58.  Within a few years, she was running marathons and by 66 she became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan, the same rock that her son, Alex, would free solo. It’s evident in both her children that they were raised by someone with lots of room to live outside the box.

We hope you enjoy this conversation.

Born and raised in Ireland, Gavan Hennigan turned a life of drug and alcohol addiction into a wonderful life of adventure. Once he managed to toss his bad habits aside, Gavan learned of a whole new world involving Ultrarunning, Snowboarding, Mountaineering, Splitboarding and even found himself employed as a commercial Deep Sea Diver working on offshore oil rigs.

As if living 700 ft below the surface of the ocean isn't adventurous enough, Gavan takes his breaks from his day job to explore some of the highest peaks in the world as well as the most brutal environments on our planet.

He has competed in some of the longest, toughest ultramarathons, like the Likeys 6633 Ultra 350 and the Yukon Arctic Ultra 300. He has climbed and snowboarded peaks in Svalbard, Antarctic, BC as well as Alaska and all seven continents.

Most motorcycle adventures are completed with a little trouble, but all-in-all they come off without a hitch. Glen Heggstad decided he would like to try the ever-popular trip to Tierra Del Fuego, the southernmost tip of South America. Things went well for Glen for the first month. After that, the trip took a very dramatic turn. So much so that National Geographic decided to produce a documentary about it. Listen in to find out what happened!

Kristin Knight Pace is one tough person. Not many people would go to Alaska during the winter, completely alone, to take care of a team of sled dogs to get over a recent divorce. However, that's exactly what she did. That toughness has also led her to become one of only 29 women to complete both the Iditarod and the Yukon Question 1000-mile sled dog races.

Kristin is now remarried and has started a new journey, motherhood. She also works as a wilderness planner for Denali National Park and has recently written a book about her experiences, This Much Country. It can be found following the link below or pretty much anywhere else you buy books.

We hope you enjoy listening to this life outside the box!

The Tour Divide is over 2700 miles of self-supported bicycle race along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route stretching between Banff, Alberta, Canada and the US-Mexico border in Antelope Wells, New Mexico. The route was created in 1997 by the Adventure Cycling Association. For 19 years now, bike packers have tackled this route with top riders finishing in just over two weeks while most don’t make it at all. Jim Goodyear is on the show today to fill us in on the experience and mental test that the Tour Divide provides. It's an epic adventure and you should definitely try it!

Jeff has always had a passion for climbing and writing. After a whirlwind of experiences in the ‘70s and ‘80s Jeff moved on to a professional career in law as he recounted his epic youth and continued his adventures in the outdoors through hiking and writing guidebooks.

He sits on the Seattle’s Camp Long Advisory Council and is the founder of Camp Long’s annual Mountain fest, which celebrates Seattle’s climbing history and culture.

His most recent project, Hangdog Days, recalls the stories of his days of traveling from one climbing area to the next witnessing many firsts and getting to know some of the most influential personalities in climbing history all while watching the sport as a whole grow from adolescence into full maturity.

Today’s Life Outside the Box episode features someone who’s balancing the delicate act of being an epic adventurer and a normal family man. Sean Green uses his precious time off work to climb and bike down the Munros of Scotland, a list of 282 mountain peaks that are scattered across the country.

Currently, Sean is approaching the halfway point of the project and it has been nothing short of a true adventure thus far. From terrible weather, broken vehicles, and totally decimated itineraries, there’s something all of us can learn from Sean, you don’t have to be a fulltime adventure athlete to do incredible things.

We hope you enjoy this down to earth conversation and we hope you get out there and plan something yourself.
