West was born and raised in Texas and found his love of water at an early age. He was heavily involved in the water sports scene in Austin for years, organizing cleanups, races, etc. However, it wasn’t until his first trip out of the county, at the age of 46, that West decided to pursue an enormous expedition, paddle the entire length of the Amazon River.

This led West to organize The 2012 National Geographic Amazon Express Expedition, which was his first expedition. It started at the newly discovered/confirmed source of the Amazon, which added almost 100 miles to the river and after 111 days, they made it to the Atlantic Ocean, 75 miles east of Belem, Brazil.

West is also the first to kayak Europe's longest river 2200 mile Volga River in Russia. In 2020 he and his group will be the first to kayak the entire Northwest Passage - 1,900 miles across the Canadian Arctic Archipelago with the “Arctic Cowboys”.

Growing up in Florida, Nick had fallen in love with water and the ocean lifestyle. However, it wasn’t until studying geography at Florida State University that he discovered just how beautiful other oceans, beaches, and islands around the world really were. He quickly set his eyes on the South Pacific and ultimately Australia. His adventures are vast, his stories are epic, and his stoke for life is contagious.

He sets his compass in the direction of the unknown because he now knows that’s the best way to better your world and open up the opportunities in front of you. Nick is a strong believer that you can do anything you want as long as you overcome the largest barrier in your way...yourself.

We heard from Captain Brian Trautman of SV Delos a while back about sailing around the world. As a way to mix things up, they recently sailed far from their usual tropical landscapes to one of iceberg-filled water of Svalbard, only 600 miles from the North Pole.  The experience proved rewarding and overflowing with adventure. We get to hear about everything from their night watching for damaging icebergs as well as their “Day of Magic” that includes an up close encounter with a polar bear.

The other half of the SV Delos crew, Brady Trautman and Alex Blue, are here today to tell about that far north experience. They’re catching up with us during their 6500 nautical miles "Lap of the Northern Atlantic Ocean”.

Enjoy!

Enlisting in the Army at the age of 22, Will Robinson had no idea how impactful of an experience it would be. Although honored and proud to serve his country, he returned 5 years later a broken man. Mentally, physically, and emotionally, the next 12 years of his life would be a stumbling progression of surgeries and therapy, with the constant companions of depression and anxiety.

That is until one day while flipping through channels, he saw the movie, Wild. Two weeks later, Will was at the southern terminus of the PCT.

The rest is well, now history. Will finished his last step of the Triple Crown just over a week ago, becoming the first African American man to complete the journey.

Growing up in California, Jon was taken on epic adventures by his father into the local mountains and national parks where the opportunity to fly fish was abundant. Later in life, however, Jon found himself in the much warmer Texas landscape where he had to adjust his skills to continue pursuing the sport.

Fly fishing is the perfect minimalistic complementary skill to so many other adventure sports; backpacking, horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, etc. It doesn't take much to throw a small rod and a few flies in with your gear and have some fresh fish on your adventure.

Sarah has always been involved in sports and has always loved adventure. She credits her mother for that. As a child she would pour through her mother’s photo albums of faraway places, hoping to one day go herself.

After years of working in the world of banking and traveling to over 40 countries, Sarah was thumbing through adventures that have never been completed when she realized no woman had ever paddled the entire Nile River, the longest river in the world.

She immediately began planning what that would look like to attempt. She was overwhelmed with fear and worry, but that didn’t stop her.

Today, we’re listening to her story of paddling the entire Nile River and what it means to put one food (or paddle) in front of the other, even when your comfort zone is nowhere in sight.

Stephan Kesting is probably best known for the huge number of Brazilian jiu-jitsu videos he has on Youtube, the martial arts training articles he’s written for Grapplearts.com, and his instructional videos which people consume in app form, online streaming form, and DVD form.

What’s not as well known is that he’s also a full-time firefighter who received the national medal of bravery for helping save two trapped firefighters from a collapse in a burning warehouse.

He’s also been an avid outdoorsman for decades. For example, in 2015 he was dying of kidney failure due to a genetic condition. A kidney transplant saved his life and 6 months later he completed a 50 km mountain endurance hike with 2,600 meters of vertical climb and descent in the snow in a single day.

He recently completed a 42 day, 1000 mile canoe trip that took him from the boreal forest of northern Canada to the open barren land tundra, and then down to Hudson bay. He was by himself and carried all his food and supplies with him. It was truly the adventure of a lifetime.

Enjoy!

When Fraser Johnston injured himself one summer, he realized that if the same injury had happened during the snowboarding season, he’d be in a heap of trouble. As a snowboard instructor, your body’s health is crucial to earning a living since you need to be on a board with your students. He quickly began brainstorming ideas to help scale his knowledge and passion for snowboarding, just in case.

On top of that, Fraser noticed a huge lack of sign-ups in snowboarding lessons compared to skiing. The cultural stigma of snowboards and skyrocketing prices of gear and lift tickets helped fuel the idea of an economical and virtual way for him to make snowboarding more accessible to more people.

He came up with Watch and Ride, a series of virtual lessons from basic to advanced to teach every type of snowboarder new tricks, skills, and the science behind snowboarding to optimally enjoy their time on the mountain. The business has been growing steadily, as well as his skills in marketing, content-creating, and scale. If you have a love for an adventure sport and want to one day turn it into a career, give this episode a listen! You’re bound to learn something from Fraser’s story.

She quickly discovered that she didn't actually have the money to go up for her first ride, but she was fortunate enough to have the instructor offer her a free ride anyway. It was this serendipitous day that ignited her passion for flight. Yvette was immediately hooked on flight and her love eventually lead her to work towards her private pilot's license as well as to discover a new passion for hang gliding. Patrick and Michael have been living with Type 1 Diabetes for most of their lives. Feeling a bit isolated and hesitant as children to venture too far away from available insulin or glucose monitoring tools, they individually pursuit adventurous lives before coming together to show the world anything is possible with T1D through their latest adventure, Project 50-IN-50

They climbed the 50 highpoints of each U.S. state and finished in 49 days – making them the first people with Type 1 diabetes to complete this achievement and joining an elite group of fewer than five people to do so the fastest in the world.

Over the course of the 2019 summer, the team road-tripped over 17,000 miles to hike, run, climb and ski through 315 miles of trails. Patrick is the first person with T1D to successfully summit the highest peak in each of the 50 states. Michael experienced an emergency Life Flight off of Granite Peak in Montana and had to miss out on a handful of the peaks. Thankfully, he’s made a full recovery. After loads of tears and challenges along the way, Patrick and Michael persevered to complete their challenge.

Project 50-IN-50 is an initiative of The Diabetes Family Connection, a North Carolina based 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. In addition to achieving a new milestone in mountaineering, Michael and Patrick have grown local and global communities of people with diabetes inspired to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

Some of are introduced to adventure sports shortly after figuring out how to walk. Some of us found ourselves eyeballs deep in our adventure passions as teenagers and, for others, it takes until their forties or later to discover the pure enjoyment we have all come to know and love no matter what age we were when it happened. And that is a great thing.

It's not crucial that we all see the light so early in life. What is important is that we eventually find ourselves living and dreaming as adventurers. Scott Newman spends time with Curt re-living his discovery and a new passion for hiking and backpacking on today's show.

Can you relate to Scott's story? If so, we would love to hear your story!

From boredofborders.com

"Karlis is an ex project manager in the field of waste management who at the age of 28 realized that visiting mountains only a couple of times a year just won’t do, so he left his job and started a life of adventures and freedom, spreading the addiction and attracting others to BoB as well. Every adventure has a different team, but all of BoB team members have one thing in common - urge to get moving and true love for adventures.

In 2013, Karlis crossed Europe from North Cape to Gibraltar on Nordic skates in 60 days covering more than 6150 kilometers and setting a new Guinness Record - The longest ride on inline-skates. (The Guinness guys have not acknowledged this yet, but who cares - we know it’s true.)

From the end of January till mid-February 2014, Karlis and three other cycling enthusiasts traveled from Riga to Sochi by bicycle realizing a 2840 kilometers long wintery ride and reaching the capital of the Winter Olympic Games of 2014 in 17 days."

He's currently making his way to mainland Asia via rowboat across the Pacific Ocean. Today, he joins us from Papua New Guinea.

Enjoy!

When Angela was ready for a new chapter in life, she wanted to go big. The PCT, AT, or other thru-hiking trails weren’t enough. She “wanted the world”. With nothing but a wheeled cart and her imagination, she set off on what is truly the adventure of a lifetime, a 5-year walk around the world.

She recently crossed 20,000 miles and is back in the US, on her way home to Bend, Oregon. Also, her 72-year young mother is currently keeping her company via bicycle.

Angela is also walking with a purpose to raise $20,000 to build a safe shelter for girls saved from gender violence and sex-trafficking in India.

When Beth’s mom, Barbara, was diagnosed with MS at the age of 38, a lot of things quickly seemed out of control and out of reach. Her mother’s confinement to a wheelchair was now the new normal. However, nothing seemed to be able to stop Barbara’s (Babsie) from wearing her room-filling smile.

Years later, when Beth went to a local running event, she saw Rick and Dick Hoyt running in a modified wheelchair, since Rick was unable to walk or speak after being born with Cerebral Palsy.

Once Beth saw the father-son duo doing the impossible, she knew that she and her mother could do those events too. She got a hold of a Hoyt “Blade” running wheelchair and started running with her mother, creating Team Babsie.

To date, they’ve completed tons of 5Ks, 10Ks, half-marathons, marathons, triathlons and charity bike rides. Last summer, Team Babsie pushed Babsie to the top of Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. Currently, they are training to qualify for the Boston Marathon and in the Spring of 2020 they are headed to Spain to walk a part of the Camino de Santiago

I hope you enjoy this story of inspiration, commitment, and love.

Have you ever wanted to just quit your job, sell your house and head out on an adventure for a decade? Yeah, me too. Today we chat with someone who actually did that and is still doing it, Brian Trautman.

After being unsatisfied with the “perfect job”, house, car, etc., he came across a book about sailing across the ocean and knew that was what he needed to do with his life.

He sold everything he owned, bought a boat, and sailed to New Zealand from Seattle. That first experience started a trend that would extend for more than a decade and lead to countless adventures that have been chronicled on his YouTube channel: Sailing SV Delos, gaining over 100 million views in the process.

To date, Brian has visited 6 continents, 40 countries, and crossed every ocean on his 53 foot Ketch.

Enjoy!

From climbingthesevensummits.com/mike-hamill

"Mike Hamill is a 6-time Everest summiteer, world-class mountain guide, and author. He oversees every CTSS expedition.

A veteran climber, Mike has built his vast experience over twenty years as a senior mountain guide across all seven continents. Known as the foremost expert, he authored the book “Climbing the Seven Summits” and has made 6 laps of the acclaimed Seven Summits mountaineering challenge. In 2008 he completes the circuit in just over 200 days.

An adventurer by nature, Mike has skied to the South Pole, cycled unsupported across the United States, competed at a national level as a Nordic skier and is an ultramarathoner, cyclist, traveler, and philanthropist. He began his climbing career on the steep rock and ice of New England and New York State while obtaining a bachelor of science from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. He is originally from Hanover, New Hampshire, and Bridgton, Maine.

His love for the mountains and adventure continues to compel him to travel the globe and connect with the local mountain communities, particularly the Sherpa of the Khumbu region. This bond was his impetus in creating the “Tiger of the Snows Fund” a not-for-profit that provides grants to further education of mountain tourism workers and their families.

Mike is a familiar and well-respected face in the mountaineering community. He is passionate about imparting his knowledge, skills, and experience to inspire others to harness their full potential in the mountains."
