Sometimes life hits you hard. Sometimes life hits you hard multiple time in a row. For Mike Cohen, he knows the feeling all too well. From surviving cancer to a heart transplant, not a day goes by that Mike isn't completely grateful for his ability to be alive. That's why this fall he'll be riding a bicycle across the country to meet the family of the man who he received his heart from. He knows that life is too precious, too fragile, and too interesting to not completely appreciate it and make the most of it.

Tristan Gooley is a New York Times-bestselling author and an avid outdoorsman. He has led expeditions on five continents, climbed mountains all over the world and is the only living person to have both flown and sailed solo across the Atlantic.

After realizing he doesn’t love talking about the gear and “stuff” of expeditions and adventures, he was curious as to why adventure called him so strongly to do these trips. Was it the thrill, the experience, or something else? He eventually realized he loved the act of “finding his way” through Nature using unconventional means, Nature itself. Thus began a lifelong passion for learning how Nature tells us where we are and how to get where we’re going.

In his books, you’ll learn how to “read” Nature to find your way.  Things like locating north using puddles, finding your proximity to civilization using plants and using the behavior of animals to forecast the weather. Don’t tune out, because Tristan shares why these skills are important for the person who will never be lost in the outdoors.

When Todd got back from deployment, he had a mound of issues to work through. Divorce, drug addiction, and chronic pain all led to him really struggling with the transition to civilian life. Not to mention, not having many folks around him that understood what war was like.

A family vacation to Yellowstone National Park changed everything. Todd felt the wilderness had given him the confidence to act on his dream of connecting veterans and their families with each other by connecting them with the outdoors. Thus, New England Adventure was born.

When Caleb sold his previous business, Bearded Brothers, his wife, Kristy, had the crazy idea of being debt free and living in an RV full-time. Everyone around them thought they were nuts! Nearly 4 years into their journey, a lot of the people who called them crazy are now jealous of their freedom, lack of “stuff”, and ability to go where the wind takes them.

Caleb and Kristy are both small business owners who are able to operate their businesses out of the compact dwelling space. They have no end their adventure in sight but admit that RV living with three kids and running businesses absolutely has its unique challenges, but it’s a tradeoff compared with a normal route in life.

Caleb is also an avid ultrarunner, taking the home and family to races all over the country. Instead of having to go to a stale hotel room after a long race, he can walk right into his house.  Pretty cool!

“There’s no way Bigfoot could be real...
...at least that’s what I thought.”

Laura Krantz is a self-described skeptic. However, several years ago she read an article about Grover Krantz, an anthropology profession and Bigfoot researcher. She thought it odd they shared last names. After more digging, she was surprised to discover that Grover was a cousin to her grandfather. She had to learn more about this mysterious world of folks who believe in the creature but aren’t “crazy”.  What she found was fascinating. These aren’t tin hat wearing antisocial hermits in the forest. They are professors, teachers, forest rangers, and police officers that all had undeniably strange encounters with a creature which they never thought they’d believe in. Laura, a former NPR producer, documented her journey which she turned into Wild Thing, a podcast about the lore and reality of who or what Bigfoot really is and her quest to know more about the folks who search for it. Enjoy!

I don't know about you, but after a long hike in the sun, an ice cold drink sounds pretty spectacular.

In an effort to do just that, James Collie noticed there weren't any products on the market to make that easy to accomplish. He decided to put garbage bags inside his day pack to hold ice. The results were dismal. He had a soaking wet back, wet gear, and an overall terrible experience trying to solve the problem.

It wouldn't be for another 20 years before he made a legitimate effort to do something about it. Thus, ICEMULE Coolers was born. They make the world's best wearable cooler. After five years, ICEMULE has built a name for itself and we get to hear the inside story of solving this problem in the outdoor industry from scratch.

Enjoy!

Outdoor photographer and writer, Philip Kramer, found himself working too much and not outside having enough fun. So, in 2013 he sat down and gave some thought to his predicament. His decision was to thru-hike the 2,650 mile Pacific Crest Trail. Thinking that he would be off on his own enjoying solitude, he quickly discovered this is not the case. However, even though he was on the trail with a bunch of new thru-hiking friends, Philip realized how revitalizing 6 months on the trail can be. Enjoy!

Daniel has struggled with depression for years, even getting to the point he didn’t want to live anymore. After his most recent suicide attempt, he knew things needed to change, quickly.

His friend decided to introduce him to bicycles. Little did they know, he'd soon fall in love with the freedom of riding and set out on a bicycle adventure to every contiguous US state to raise awareness for suicide prevention and to connect veterans, like himself, with each other and a greater sense of community.

After 8 months on the road, Daniel has some incredible stories to tell as well as a new outlook on just how friendly complete strangers can be.

I hope you enjoy our conversation and consider helping Daniel continue his journey. He’s probably going through your town! Keep it up, Daniel!

Ruben Martinez wanted to do something that "forced" he and his friend to always be able to hang out. The idea they came up with? Glamping Hub, a travel booking platform similar to Airbnb, but for unique outdoor accommodations that give guests direct access to Mother Nature.

The idea grew! They went from around 8,000 listings a few years ago to nearly 40,000 today through their online platform.

I hope you enjoy our conversation about what Ruben's experience has been thus far with growing a company that connects thousands of people with the outdoors.

Anna-Marie Watson grew up in an outdoor-loving, adventurous family. The adventures continued as she served nearly a decade in the British Army. Upon leaving the military, she knew she did not want a standard job and "normal" life. So, what did she do? She flew to New Zealand to bicycle the country. This started a series of adventures that led her to compete in the world half Ironman, running (and winning second place female) the Marathon De Sables, and many other adventures. And she is not slowing down. She is back on to fill us in on the Ultra Trail Du Mont Blanc – a 171 km race around Mont Blanc. She offers coaching services as well through her company, Reach For More Coaching. She shares much about what it takes to build an adventure-focused lifestyle.

Leaving a great job with good benefits to start a company that's technically illegal to operate out of your apartment is a big jump at best, completely irrational and foolish at worst. Today, Amy and Jordan wouldn't have it any other way with building Powder7, considered one of Outside Magazine's Best Places to Work.

This episode is filled with humor, insight, and adventure, like the time Jordan beat Lance Armstrong by an inch in a half-Ironman race. I hope you enjoy this conversation around life, business, and adventure sports!

Today’s guest, Brandi Mueller, is an avid diver and underwater photographer. She’s dived in over 30 countries and works as an instructor for much of the year. Her passion for diving is infectious and her expertise has been featured in dozens of publications all over the world.
Recently, she co-authored a book about her experience diving to see an underwater airplane graveyard where 150 American airplanes were dumped at the end of WWII in the lagoon of Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands. The haunting pile of flightless planes were surprisingly photogenic and getting the location was half the adventure. Enjoy!
