Apr 22, 2019

With trails becoming more overcrowded by the year, folks seeking isolation will need to do one of two things; find more “wild” trails and locations or find a new adventure sport altogether.  Brett, an experienced instructor, is joining us today to tell us why sea kayaking is such a wonderful experience and why you should consider it for your next adventure sport obsession. He has us convinced!

Most motorcycle adventures are completed with a little trouble, but all-in-all they come off without a hitch. Glen Heggstad decided he would like to try the ever-popular trip to Tierra Del Fuego, the southernmost tip of South America. Things went well for Glen for the first month. After that, the trip took a very dramatic turn. So much so that National Geographic decided to produce a documentary about it. Listen in to find out what happened!

Kristin Knight Pace is one tough person. Not many people would go to Alaska during the winter, completely alone, to take care of a team of sled dogs to get over a recent divorce. However, that's exactly what she did. That toughness has also led her to become one of only 29 women to complete both the Iditarod and the Yukon Question 1000-mile sled dog races.

Kristin is now remarried and has started a new journey, motherhood. She also works as a wilderness planner for Denali National Park and has recently written a book about her experiences, This Much Country. It can be found following the link below or pretty much anywhere else you buy books.

We hope you enjoy listening to this life outside the box!

The Tour Divide is over 2700 miles of self-supported bicycle race along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route stretching between Banff, Alberta, Canada and the US-Mexico border in Antelope Wells, New Mexico. The route was created in 1997 by the Adventure Cycling Association. For 19 years now, bike packers have tackled this route with top riders finishing in just over two weeks while most don’t make it at all. Jim Goodyear is on the show today to fill us in on the experience and mental test that the Tour Divide provides. It's an epic adventure and you should definitely try it!

Jeff has always had a passion for climbing and writing. After a whirlwind of experiences in the ‘70s and ‘80s Jeff moved on to a professional career in law as he recounted his epic youth and continued his adventures in the outdoors through hiking and writing guidebooks.

He sits on the Seattle’s Camp Long Advisory Council and is the founder of Camp Long’s annual Mountain fest, which celebrates Seattle’s climbing history and culture.

His most recent project, Hangdog Days, recalls the stories of his days of traveling from one climbing area to the next witnessing many firsts and getting to know some of the most influential personalities in climbing history all while watching the sport as a whole grow from adolescence into full maturity.

Today’s Life Outside the Box episode features someone who’s balancing the delicate act of being an epic adventurer and a normal family man. Sean Green uses his precious time off work to climb and bike down the Munros of Scotland, a list of 282 mountain peaks that are scattered across the country.

Currently, Sean is approaching the halfway point of the project and it has been nothing short of a true adventure thus far. From terrible weather, broken vehicles, and totally decimated itineraries, there’s something all of us can learn from Sean, you don’t have to be a fulltime adventure athlete to do incredible things.

We hope you enjoy this down to earth conversation and we hope you get out there and plan something yourself.

If you've ever done a workout in the wilderness, you know how awesome of an experience it can be. The smells, the sights, the feeling in the air once you get your heart rate going. It beats the heck out of any gym, any day. That was the inspiration behind monkii's co-founder, Dan Vinson. How can you get an epic workout from anywhere, especially in the wild? Well, Dan and his friend came up with monkii, the simple to use, easy to set up, and awesome workout tool that can go with you to the most remote places on earth.

In today's story, we hear about Dan's background, where the idea for monkii bars came from, his crazy PR stunts and very successful Kickstarter campaigns. It's an inspiring tale of taking what's never been done and doing it wildly.

Live wild or die, my friends.

Laura doesn’t particularly like rowing, which sounds crazy after you realize she rowed a boat 3,000 miles across the Atlantic with a team of three other women in just 43 days 2 hours and 20 minutes. On top of that, they managed to do this by rowing in 2-hour shifts, 24-hours a day, every single day. It’s not rowing that Luara loves, but a pure and unfiltered adventure and the push of the human spirit to experience it.

We hope you enjoy this wonderful conversation around adventure and the unexpected joys and struggles when you put yourself out there.

In 2018, Heather Anderson became the first woman to hike all three of the "Triple Crown" thru-hikes; Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide Trails in a single calendar year. The 7,900-mile journey took 251 days to complete and led her to become a 2019 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year.

She also holds the overall record for self-supported fastest known time on the Pacific Crest Trail (60 days) and the women's self-supported FKT on the Appalachian Trail (54 days).

Her book, Thirst: 2600 Miles to Home came out earlier this month, which recounts her story of leaving her unsatisfying job, marriage, and life after her first thru-hike in order to return back to the trail and begin hiking again.

Adventure (ad·ven·ture): an unusual and exciting, typically hazardous, experience or activity.

That basically sums up life itself. The most unexpected, seemingly unfair, and hazardous things happen to us at every turn. We want adventure, but don't always love when it shows up. A life-altering injury is, by the definition above, an adventure. Well, it's not always exciting, but you get the picture.

To go from a collapsed spine at the age of 19 to being on a sponsored climbing expedition to the Ivory Coast is not an overnight journey, nor is it pleasant, but it is adventure. Astrid's story is one of hope, patience and sheer grit to rise from what many would call a crippling situation (literally) to seeing the beauty in what happens to all of us at some point and accepting it as what life is all about.

Adventure doesn't always lead us down a peaceful path but teaches us to find peace no matter what path we're on.

Today’s episode is with one of the former hosts of the Adventure Sports Podcast, Travis Parson, with his wife Jen who packed up their kids and dogs and set out for a year-long fulltime RVing adventure (a goal that ultimately led Travis to have to stop hosting the show!).

Today’s episode is their 6-month update and what an adventure it has been so far! Life on the road truly is one day at a time because each day feels like it has the same amount of experiences as an entire month back in normal life. We hope you’re inspired after this!

In his 28-year career as a physics teacher in McAllen, TX, Curt has done two separate zero gravity experiments totaling 30 minutes of floating in air. The first time was with NASA scientists testing the software to control Robonaut in a zero-G environment. The second was sponsored by Northrup Grumman, a defense contractor, to spark interest in science in students. As far as adventure goes, it doesn't get any more unique than this!

Andrew is essentially a "professional backpacker" who is best known for his long-distance backpacking trips, many of which are firsts.

For instance, his 6,875-mile Great Western Loop, his 7,778-mile Sea-to-Sea Rou, e and his 4,679-mile "loop" of Alaska on foot, raft, and ski. He also has completed a plethora of shorter adventurers that would be on anyone's bucket list.

He's been considered the John Muir and Henry David Thoreau of Generation Y, was Backpacker Magazine Person of the Year, and National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, among other awards.

However, today's episode is not specifically about those adventures, but about what life has been like after those achievements. How has he built a sustainable career from backpacking? What future adventures is he planning?  Listen in to find out.

Erika Bergman is a submarine pilot, engineer, and a National Geographic Explorer. We talked with her back in episode 427 about taking Sir Richard Branson and Fabien Cousteau (grandson of famed ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau) on a submarine adventure into the depth of Belize's Great Blue Hole.

The mission was successfully completed back in December and we're having her recount the adventure today!

In 2013 she received a National Geographic Explorers grant for her "Classrooms Under the Sea" expedition which live-streamed submarine expeditions to classrooms. She's a superb storyteller with many interesting tales and accomplishments to share!

She is also the Founder of GEECs - Global Engineering & Exploration Counselors; providing a network of thrilling engineering camps to girls around the world.

Have you ever just wanted to start your own brand of camping and backpacking gear?  Yeah, me neither. Brian Conolly, however, thought he could make better products than what he was finding on store shelves and online trying to outfit his own adventures. I know many of you out there probably have an idea to improve an outdoor or adventure sport product but don't know where to start. Listen in Brian talks about his journey starting a gear company from scratch.

Enjoy!

With the mountains still getting pounded by snow throughout the continent, it's important to revisit the crucial understanding of the danger of our environment.

Nolan Hurd, a mountaineering BC101 teacher, spends some time to educate us on avalanche safety. It doesn't matter if you're a beginner or a seasoned professional, you're in for some excellent information we all need to have before entering the snow-filled backcountry!
