Justin Simoni is synonymous with "pure adventure."  This guy's self-powered running, cycling, and climbing trips are mind-bending in difficulty and require unbelievable mental endurance. He's well known for riding a bike to and climbing all of Colorado's 14ers in one fell swoop back in 2014.  However, a few years later, that wasn't enough. This led him to bike to and climb Colorado's highest 100 peaks, nearly doubling the mountains climbed in his 14ers achievement. I hope you enjoy our two-part conversation on adventures and how he makes them happen.

Hope y'all had a Merry Christmas!

Sarah Williams, friend of the Adventure Sports Podcast, and host of the Tough Girl Podcast is back with us today to talk about her 100-day Appalachian Trail thru-hike. Sarah got the bug to thru-hike one of the crown trails after learning of the successful completion on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed. She managed to set herself a goal and piece together what she needed to succeed and succeed she did. Even though she had major concerns about her ability to accomplish this awesome feat in her 100-day timeline, she managed to do it and is here to tell us all about it.

Courtney Condy graduated college in 2013 and jumped right into the corporate sector thinking she would have time later to travel and pursue her adventures. She was wrong.

After finding inspiration from a friend and none from her job, she finally booked an Everest Base Camp Trek in 2015. On that journey, she ended up almost dying in the April 25 Nepal earthquake. It was an adventure, to say the least. It changed her whole life to the point she opted out of her desk job and started working as an adventure travel guide all over the world.

Earlier this year after seeing a gap in the adventure career market she decided to break away from her job, once again, to launch her own company, Occupation Wild, where he hopes of helping others find their dream job and live a life beyond 9 to 5.

When director Alex Jablonski wanted to film wildland firefighters up close and personal, he needed to become one himself. After that, he needed to haul both his firefighting and camera equipment to be able to share a personal look into the daily lives of wildland firefighting. Listen in as Alex and I discuss what it was like to become a firefighter, be accepted by the group and ultimately witness many of the guys go from boys to men.

Today's Life Outside the Box episode takes us into the world of adventure coupled with academia. Scott Wyatt is the president of Southern Utah University, also known as the "University of the Parks." Being an avid mountaineer and ultrarunner himself, Scott knows the teaching power of nature and incorporates that power into every aspect of life on campus for students and faculty at SUU. This was an incredible conversation about adventure, grit, a lifetime of learning, and the healing power of the wonderful and awesome outdoors from someone leading the charge in getting college campuses to take advantage of nearby adventure.

Did you know that bears don't actually growl as Hollywood has you believe? In fact, in most movies, a bear growl is actually a wolf growl. Did you also know that a dog on a leash is a great bear deterrent, but a dog off its leash is a great way to have yourself a bear encounter? In this episode Mike McIntosh, of the Bear With Us Sanctuary Rehabilitation Center, helps us understand what we need to know about living with bears while playing in the wild.

Well, it’s a gorgeous and relatively unknown thru-hiking tail in eastern Europe. Richard just completed it. Listen on in his experience on the trail as well as his other crazy adventures, like his epic multi-year around-the-world road trip where he nearly ran out of food and money.

Revisited episode 268.

Dan Keeley is on a mission to raise awareness for depression and bipolar disorder by running 1,250 miles self-supported from Rome to London. It's called Rome to Home. In the summer of 2012 he experienced a full-blown manic episode – an episode which culminated with him believing he was ‘the chosen one’ and preaching from the central lane of a major motorway in Italy at rush hour. What followed was a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder, time spent in psychiatric wards both in Italy and the UK, and the inevitable crippling depression which found him wanting to take my his own life. It has been 5 years now and Dan is doing awesome! He has a new lease on life and is using it to its fullest. Listen in to learn about Dan, his wild trip through this ordeal and what he is doing now to bring attention to this issue. There could not be a nicer guy to help us understand what people with depression are going through.

You're probably familiar with John's name and work but do you know about his journey from not being able to get a single company to publish his books to now being on countless coffee tables and walls around the world? Pursuing your dreams is not always a cakewalk. In fact, sometimes it's a downright nightmare but every once in a while, if you're lucky, your hard work lands in the hands of the Pope himself. Listen to the episode to learn what that's about! I hope you enjoy this honest conversation from one of America's most iconic photographers.

At some point in the pursuit of our adventure sports, we will have an injury. As we get older those injuries and the slowing of our bodies can compile to limit our abilities drastically. Who are you as a person if you couldn't do your adventure sport(s) anymore? Are you willing to think about how much of your identity is wrapped in what you can achieve athletically?

Today's episode discusses the challenges and beauty that limitations can bring if we're willing to remain positive and look for opportunities to discover new passions. I hope you enjoy Bart's story about reshaping his identity and discovering new adventure sports as his body "directs" him.

After college, Joe Jimenez thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail.  When he returned home he found himself not really looking forward to the daily responsibilities of “normal life.”  This led Joe and his wife to some radical changes in their lives.  First, they decided to move into an RV.  Second, they budgeted to save as much money as possible.  Third, they have built a life that allows them the freedom to do the jobs they want as well as have the money they need to stay healthy, keep active, and ultimately chase adventure.  Now Joe is extremely passionate about sharing his ideas and life/travel-hacking principles.  I hope you learn something from today’s episode!

Free Soloing is definitely stupid in a lot of ways. We don't condone the sport. However, Austin Howell struck me as particularly calculated and contemplative in his approach to soloing. When most people go to Disney World they're not really inspired to go and start a trekking company halfway around the actual world. As you'll learn from this episode, Mark is not most people. In fact, that trip to Disney coupled with a Lyft ride was enough for him and his wife, Holly, to totally transform their lives to pursue a dream that seemed impossible, especially to the folks around them in rural Tennessee. I hope you're as inspired as I am after hearing about this amazing adventure that should prove to us that anything is possible from anywhere, you just have to start moving.

Erden Eruc has a world-class adventure resume. With 15 Guinness World Records, tens of thousands of miles of first-ever human-powered achievements, and an emotional story that started his journeys, you'd think he'd have a best-selling book and endless speaking engagements by now. As you'll hear, none of these things have come into fruition for Erden. It has been a grind from the beginning to the present. However, that hasn't crushed his thirst for adventure and need for bigger and bigger challenges. It certainly hasn't taken away from the amazing feats Erden has accomplished. Actually, the fact he doesn't have huge sponsors and crowds of fans makes his motivation all the more impressive.

What are you willing to go through to chase your dream? Will it be worth it in the end? Listen in on today's episode from someone who knows how lonely it can be on the top.

Grace McDonald found herself working incredibly long hours as an attorney. However, her desire to climb the world's greatest mountains got the best of her. She traded in her security and career for a pair of crampons and hit the ground running (well trekking really). She hasn't looked back since. We caught up with her to see if she's found what she's looking for.

Alex is not your typical 18 years old. Instead of setting out to trade school, college, or hanging out at home after the summer of high school graduation, Alex decided he wanted to do something adventurous to transition into this new phase of life called adulthood. That desire led him to kayak 1,750 km around the edges of Lake Winnipeg, something incredibly daunting considering the remoteness of much of the lake as well as the unpredictable weather.
Alex is incredibly articulate for his age and understands that this trip was an amazing opportunity to show the world the importance of keeping resources like Lake Winnipeg free of pollution, invasive species, and a refuge for the human soul. He’s already an experienced adventurer and we’re super excited that Alex joined us for this interview as we’re sure he’ll be an even bigger name in the outdoor community very soon.

So is it difficult to build an outdoor business and brand from nothing in one of the meccas of the outdoor industry? You guessed it. It might take you investing your entire life savings or living in a van for months on end or even giving up almost everything (including your sanity) to realize your dream.  Like I've always said, chasing your dreams can be a nightmare. We hope you enjoy this open and honest discussion with Feral Mountain Co. founder, Jimmy Funkhouser. After listening about the highs and lows of building something from nothing, we hope you get out there and try something incredibly difficult yourself.

Over the next decade and three thousand miles of rugged horse trail, Patagonia’s wild country and the hardy pioneers who settled there took her in and changed her. So many of us deal with mental health issues but we can feel isolated in our struggle.  It's hard to talk about.  However, it's no secret that speaking to someone about it and getting outside can help tremendously. In this episode, Georgina Jackson opens up about her struggle with bipolar disorder and how climbing helps her figuratively and literally reach new heights. If mental health is something you may be struggling with, please seek help.  There's no shame in that!  MOST people will deal with it at some point in their lives.

Allen Kenneth Schaidle lives in Dubai, but he spends his leisure time researching boulders on America’s grand prairie. His bookcase has an entire shelf dedicated to his collection of Midwest climbing guidebooks. The first guidebook he purchased was Sandstone Warrior: Bouldering Southern Illinois by Matt Bliss. Today, you’ll find it stained, marked with personal notes, and dog-eared from years of trips to some of the world’s best sandstone boulders. Unfortunately, just as he left his Midwest roots for global pursuits, the bouldering of Missouri and other heartland states experienced a resurgence. On this episode, Allen shares, with us, the adventure to be had in the Midwest and he makes a strong argument for the Midwest's rock climbing bragging rights altering some stereotypes along the way.

This show departs from our usual content in that we are sharing how to avoid one of the biggest and most dangerous pitfalls of adventure sports.  No, not the bike or ski crash.  Not getting lost in the wilderness.  No sinking boats or parachute failures. None of that.  This is how to avoid the most common and dangerous attacks of wildlife!  Ya really.  Not the big ones, though. The tiny, nefarious, forsaken, ticks and mosquitoes, and biting flies, and the rest. Seriously, this is probably the biggest nuisance and deterrent to people getting out into nature and having fun. Emily Dix joins us to share her love of the outdoors and how her family business is solving the problems of vector born illnesses.  No more excuses!

In 1982, at the age of just twenty-three and halfway through her architecture studies, Elspeth Beard left her family and friends in London and set off on a 35,000-mile solo adventure around the world on her 1974 BMW R60/6.

Reeling from a recent breakup and with only limited savings from her pub job, a tent, a few clothes and some tools, all packed on the back of her bike, she was determined to prove herself. She had ridden bikes since her teens and was well traveled. But nothing could prepare her for what lay ahead.

When she returned to London nearly two and a half years later she was stones lighter and decades wiser. She'd ridden through unforgiving landscapes and countries ravaged by war, witnessed civil uprisings that forced her to fake documents, and fended off sexual attacks, biker gangs and corrupt police convinced she was trafficking drugs. She'd survived life-threatening illnesses, personal loss and brutal accidents that had left permanent scars and a black hole in her memory. And she'd fallen in love with two very different men. In an age before email, the internet, mobile phones, sat-navs and, in some parts of the world, readily available and reliable maps, Elspeth achieved something that would still seem remarkable today.

Told with honesty and wit, this is the extraordinary and moving story of a unique and life-changing adventure.

Felicity Aston MBE is a British Polar Explorer, author, speaker and expedition leader. In 2012, she became the first woman to ski alone across Antarctica, a journey of 1084 miles that took 59 days to complete. That expedition garnered her a Guinness World Record. She has also been elected Fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society in London and The Explorers Club in New York.

Her love for polar exploration began at the age of 23 at Rothera Research Station on the Antarctic Peninsula, where she monitored the climate as a meteorologist.

Her expeditions have taken her to places like Greenland, where she became the first British woman to cross the giant landmass, both the North and South Pole, and to leading numerous record-breaking adventures all over the world, involving all women teams.

Her story is truly inspirational and her achievements are downright amazing. Enjoy!

The story that's so incredible it deserves a second listen.  All the way back in episode 217, Steve joined us to recount his adventure of survival.

An avid sailor, naval architect and New York Times best-selling author, Steve Callahan designed and built his 21' sloop the Napolean Solo to sail it across the Atlantic Ocean from Newport, RI to England with plans to compete in a regatta. Once underway in the race, Steve experienced issues with the boat and was forced to drop out. Once repairs were made, he continued on his way only to be stopped in his tracks in the middle of the ocean when his sailboat was struck and began to sink.

Listen is as Steve recounts his 76 day journey across the Atlantic in his life raft with only his ditch kit and a small spear gun with him.

Ever want to see the world, meet the people, and make a difference that really matters? Zack Smith shares this very inspiring story of how simply going to where the hurt is can develop into a lifelong journey of adventure and caring around the world. It all started when Zach and some colleagues traveled to Haiti to help after the earthquakes there. Next came travel around Africa in a Cessna to remote villages to assist with surgeries. One thing led to another and now they have built a clinic in Nigeria that is caring for people from dozens of villages in the area. Real lives touched. Real impact. Real adventure that matters.

When David Mauro was in his forties, his life hit rock bottom. With nothing to lose, he left everything he knew behind and set out on an epic international adventure. For the next seven years, Dave trudged across glaciers, frozen wastelands and through dense, dangerous forests. He communed with penguins and elephants, kept company with cannibals and gunrunners, and spoke with the dead. And though he’d never been a climber, he ended up joining history’s courageous few when he ascended into the clouds to stand at the summit of Mt Everest.

Tamela Rich began her love affair with the open road as a child, traveling with her family in the Vista Cruiser wagon from Ohio to California every other summer. She re-discovered America in the wake of a personal crisis, when she learned how to ride a motorcycle and took her first solo cross-country ride. Tamela learned to ride when she was 48 and three months after getting her motorcycle endorsement, took off on an 18-state 7500 mile solo trip from NC to Oregon and back. Since then she's traveled 47 states and 5 Canadian provinces on her motorcycle, mostly solo. Her award-winning book, "Live Full Throttle: Life Lessons from Friends Who Faced Cancer" was based on two years of cross-country motorcycling for cancer causes.

Tamela is also writing her new book "Fear: How to communicate with the Great Messenger of Life". If you have a great story about fear or questions about fear, feel free to contact Tamela through her website.

Listen in as we revisit one of our favorite overlanding shows.  Several years ago Luisa and Graeme Bell along with their kids Keelan and Jessica set out to explore the African continent via overland vehicle. It didn't take but a few days back in the home in South Africa to realize that they needed to see more. Much more! So they put their existing lives aside, purchased a 2009 Land Rover Defender 130 and outfitted it for full-time living. The Bells then started to roam. Their travels have taken them around the African continent nearly twice and then up through South and Central America winding them through the United States and up to Alaska. We've caught up with them while they are house sitting in Baja Mexico. Listen in to hear how they do it and what experiences they've had so far!

Jen Beck Seymour and Greg Seymour found themselves bogged down in the daily 9-5 grind as many of us do. They were working long hours in Dallas having spent 20+ years in their corporate jobs earning good money only to live a life of comfort and purchasing their toys, but realized that actually had very little time together to use those toys and spent it with each other. They weren't particularly happy in their situation. Sound familiar at all? When Greg's health appeared to be taking a turn for the worse due to stress, the two decided they must find a better way. They considered other options to stay working elsewhere in the US, but decided that a major relocation and mind-shift was in order. Jen and Greg ultimately decided to retire early, sell the house as well as all of the toys and move south to Costa Rica. This was Greg's idea which did not sit very well with Jen at first, but she eventually warmed up to it and to Costa Rica they went. Listen in to hear their story and the happiness that followed their monumental decision.

In 2013, Darcy Gaechter became the first woman (and vegan) to kayak the Amazon River from source to sea. With blistering lips and irradiated fingernails, her team of three paddlers tackled Class V whitewater for twenty-five days in a row; just barely survived a dynamite laden canyon being prepared for a hydroelectric dam, and pled for mercy at the hands of the murderous Ashaninka people who remained somewhat convinced we had come to steal their children's organs. In a desperate act meant to give me some pretense of control, Darcy cut off all of her hair just before they entered Peru’s notoriously violent “Red Zone.” The hope was to pass for a boy and be seen as less of a target. Despite all odds, they reached the Atlantic Ocean 4,300 miles and 148 days of kayaking later. Upon reaching the Atlantic, the three, an esoteric computer programmer from London, a vegan girl from Aspen, CO and her begrudging boyfriend who would become the first man to kayak the Amazon, “because his girlfriend made him”—became the first three people to kayak the entire Amazon. Darcy became the first woman to do it. Now, the same number of people have walked on the moon as have descended the Amazon from source to sea.

Welcome to another ASP Stories bonus episode. We will be having authors read from their books featuring each chapter as a new episode. Think of these bonus episodes as an ongoing audiobook for free. So sit back, relax and enjoy a chapter from "None Such Like It" by Annie Dike. When Annie met her boyfriend Phillip, she learned he had the dream to purchase a sailboat and embark on journeys across the ocean while he was still young and had the ability to. Having never really considered sailing as a way of life, Annie was simply interested in Phillip's dream, and maybe more so in Phillip, to join him on his adventures. With a few years under their belts now as seasoned sailors, Annie has written three books, maintains her blog "Have Wind Will Travel" and produces a YouTube Channel chronicling their journey. You can also hear more from Annie of episodes 75 & 138 of the Adventure Sports Podcast.

But can you imagine using your paraglider as your transportation method to new overnight camping locations and putting a multi-day trip together? That would be sweet! Nick Neynens is on the show today to explain what this "Vol-Biv" sport is and what it's like to soar up in the air like an eagle with the intention of landing to camp each day. One of our favorite recurring guests, George Kourounis, is back on the show today. George recently returned from Nepal where he visited Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas to film a TV show. They decided to try visiting the base camp with no acclimatization. So they took a helicopter up with no time to adjust. George immediately experienced the effects of hypoxia during this trip. George was also fortunate enough to meet Kancha Sherpa on this helicopter ride. Kancha Sherpa is the last surviving member of Sir Edmond Hillary's 1953 expedition to be the first people to reach the summit of Everest.

On our last show with George, he was preparing to head to North Korea for a rare opportunity to mountain trek, climb and camp. He was approved by the government and was able to travel there in May of 2017. He fills us in on what it was like to be a western-world guest in this secretive country during tumultuous political times. His experience is an interesting one that most of us never get to hear much less experience. Listen in to hear about what the mountains and surroundings are like over there.

George tells about his continued trips to volcanoes including 11,384 ft Mt Nyiragongo which is an active volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He explains that the lake nearby, Lake Kivu,  which is susceptible to exploding due to the vast amounts of dissolved carbon dioxide at the bottom. The volcano holds the world's largest boiling lake of lava.

He traveled down the Road of Bones to visit a village in the middle of Siberia, Oymyakon, which is known as the coldest place on earth. He tells us a story about visiting a preserved woolly mammoth frozen in the permafrost and when no one was looking, George snapped off a little mammoth to have a taste. Listen in to hear what that experience was like for him.

Then we discussed the difficulty of ice climbing on icebergs to place satellite tracking devices on them for tracking the path of the icebergs as they float through the ocean.

It's never a dull hour when our friend George Kourounis joins us on the show.

Susan Elderkin’s parents pointed her down her first trail, along Minnesota’s Lake Superior, at the age of three. By age 10 she outpaced her family on annual vacations to Grand Teton National Park. As an adult, she found she was spending all of her free time hiking and backpacking, so she quit her job in Washington, DC, packed her backpack and spent six weeks thru-hiking the Colorado Trail from Denver to Durango in 1995. Listen in as Curt and Susan discuss the importance of getting your kids comfortable with and excited for the outdoors. The two discuss tips and tricks to keep kids happy on the trail as well as the best trails to help introduce them to the outdoors.

Jane Parnell has been hiking and climbing the Rocky Mountains since the 1970's when she discovered how the mountains could heal her traumatic wounds. After being raped when she was twenty-one and with few people believing her claim, she met a mountaineer who introduced her to mountaineering. They would eventually be married. Jane's new passion helped her cope with the trauma of the rape and other family issues that weighed heavily on her throughout life. By the time she was thirty, she had become the first woman to climb the 100 highest peaks of Colorado. Jane continued her quest for the summit by turning the goal of sumitting the 100 highest peaks into conquering the 200 highest and ultimately setting her sights on the 300 highest and nearly reached that goal. Jane is on the show today to share with us the ways in which adventure sports,  and more specifically mountaineering,  can help us find and maintain some sanity in our crazy world. Check out her new book: "Off Trail: Finding My Way Home in the Colorado Rockies"

Some of are introduced to adventure sports shortly after figuring out how to walk. Some of us found ourselves eyeballs deep in our adventure passions as teenagers and, for others, it takes until their forties or later to discover the pure enjoyment we have all come to know and love no matter what age we were when it happened. And that is a great thing. It's not crucial that we all see the light so early in life. What is important is that we do eventually find ourselves living and dreaming as adventurers. Scott Newman spends time with Curt re-living his discovery and new passion for hiking and backpacking on today's show. Can you relate to Scott's story? if so, join our Facebook group and tell us about it. We would love to hear your story!

Nate Marr from Marauder Sailing Charters is back on the show with us today to fill us in on the horrifying experience of living through hurricane Maria and what it did to his home island of Vieques. Nate shares how locals and outsiders alike have come together to rebuild their tropical community and how you can get involved yourself. Make sure you take some time to listen to this one. It's so easy to jump back into our everyday hectic lives and forget that these communities are still, to this day, fighting to get back on their feet and return normalcy to their lives.

Holiday Flashback - Brian Brown, along with his wife and one of his daughters, flew out of northern California in their personal plane, a Cessna 172, with plans to visit their oldest daughter in Mountain Home, ID. The trip was going well until weather started filling in the skies directly in their path. After diverting to an abandoned airfield to wait out the storm for a while, they saw what they thought was their chance to continue on. It didn't take long before their plans were drastically changed. The plane was engulfed in low-level clouds making it impossible for safe visual flight. In attempt to find a solution, the plane with the three family members aboard, slammed into the side of a mountain in Idaho. The book is: "Rescued: One Family's Miraculous Story of Survival"
