  • Ep. 1013: Kayaking the Northwest Passage - West Hansen

Today we’re hearing from Adventure Sports Podcast alumni, West Hanson. You may remember West from episode 581, when he kayaked the Amazon River from source to sea.

This adventure is another world record: the first kayakers to complete the Northwest Passage in a single expedition. The 1,600-mile, 83-day (total of 105 days) paddle is the epitome of an epic adventure, making this episode an instant classic.

West’s account of the sub-freezing expedition is wonderful. You’re going to love this one!

West is a 61-year-old social worker in the mental health field for several decades. At age 46, he was invited to compete with friends in a raft race on the Amazon River in Iquitos. This was his first trip outside of the US and after 20 years racing ultramarathon canoes/kayaks, it sparked his interest in long-distance expeditions.

He is the first to lead successful expeditions down the entire lengths of the Amazon and Volga Rivers.

  • Ep. 1012: How Adventure Improves Our Lives as We Age - Caroline Paul

Author Caroline Paul has always filled her life with adventure. Now in her late fifties, she expects this new stage of life to be every bit as invigorating and full of high adrenalin escapades as the last. But as she skateboards, paddles a SUP, or surfs in cold winter swell alongside many men her age, she sees fewer and fewer older women. Isn’t the outdoors a vital elixir? Shouldn’t adventure be something we pursue as we age?

These are the questions Caroline Paul asks in her new book, Tough Brough. Among the interviews were 93-year-old hiker Dot Fisher-Smith, 80-year-old SCUBA diver Louise Wholey, 52-year-old BASE jumper Drew Brooks, and the many septuagenarian Wave Catchers, who boogie board together in the San Diego surf. These women aren’t famous. They aren’t experts. But their experiences offer important insight into our own physical and emotional health as we age.

Caroline dives deep into the research on aging, but also accompanies older women on bird-watching outings, sea kayaking excursions, swim laps, and walks in the park, among other outdoor adventures, and begins to see her own future in a new and dazzling light. Combining scientific research, cultural studies, psychology, and personal stories, Tough Broad is a high-spirited call for women to embrace the outdoors, not back away from it, in our fifties, sixties, seventies and beyond.

Caroline Paul is the author of the New York Times bestseller The Gutsy Girl: Escapades for Your Life of Epic Adventure and Lost Cat: A True Story of Love, Desperation, and GPS Technology, which has been translated into fifteen languages. She is also the author of the memoir Fighting Fire, the middle-grade book You Are Mighty: A Guide to Changing the World, and the novel East Wind, Rain. Her TED Talk, “To Raise Brave Girls, Encourage Adventure,” has been viewed over 2 million times. A longtime member of the Writers Grotto, she lives in San Francisco.

  • Ep. 1011: Dog Sledding, the Iditarod, & Life in Alaska - Revisited - Kristin Knight Pace

    Originally aired April 12, 2019.

Kristin Knight Pace is one tough person. Not many people would go to Alaska during the winter, completely alone, to take care of a team of sled dogs to get over a recent divorce. However, that's exactly what she did. That toughness has also led her to become one of only 29 women to complete both the Iditarod and the Yukon Question 1000-mile sled dog races.

Kristin is now remarried and has started a new journey, motherhood. She also works as a wilderness planner for Denali National Park and has recently written a book about her experiences, This Much Country. It can be found following the link below or pretty much anywhere else you buy books.

We hope you enjoy listening to this life outside the box!

  • Ep. 1010: Paddleboarding 1,000 Miles on the Yukon River - Craig Sawyer

When Craig and his buddy, Skip,  applied for the longest paddle race in the world in 2019, he had no idea how much that decision would change his life. Once selected, the realization that he had never done anything like this, had no real skills or talent in paddling, and knew nothing about adventure started flooding his mind.

However Craig and Skip committed to giving it their best effort and put a plan together to train, learn, and go from never racing before to completing a fully self-supported 1,000-mile paddle through some of the most remote wilderness in North America.

At 46 years young, Craig wanted to inspire others to push themselves and take on challenges that go beyond their comfort zone. When I applied for the Yukon 1000 in 2019 I had not taken part in any feat of endurance.

  • Ep. 1008: Florida Trail FKT - Hunter Leininger

After years of watching his dad participate in endurance adventure races, Hunter begged him to let him join in on a race. His dad looked around at all his fellow competitors and noticed there wasn't a single kid out there let alone someone even in their 20s. Dad was eventually convinced to let Hunter do a 6-hour adventure race at 7 years old!

That kicked off an adventure career that spans some of the most difficult challenges in adventure racing, including many “youngest ever” records.

Today we’re talking about Hunter’s most recent experience, a fastest known time of the iconic Florida Trail, the official thru-hike of winter!

The 1,100 mile trek through swamp, sand, and skeeters was completed by Hunter in 21.5 days.

  • Ep. 1007: My Adventure Formula - Mason Gravley

Hey y’all! Doing something a little different today. I want to share the formula that my friends and I have come up with in recent years to ensure we get out and adventure on a regular basis. As the host of this show, I probably don’t get out there as much as you’d think, only because of the time of life and the fact a lot of my free time is used in producing the podcast!

This formula has helped us ensure we put adventure on the calendar and make it happen. This mindset has been heavily inspired by Frazer Buntin’s annual “Big Trip”, which you can learn more about in Episode 717: How to Pull off an Epic Yearly Adventure With Your Friends - Frazer Buntin.

    https://www.adventuresportspodcast.com/2021/05/ep-717-how-to-pull-off-epic-yearly.html

  • Ep. 1006: Paddling the Intracoastal Waterway - Heather Bolint

For the last several years Heather Bolint has led a nomadic lifestyle, initially inspired by her decision to quit her job and thru-hike the Appalachian Trail as a solo female. You might have heard about her hiker fame of rescuing an abandoned rooster on the AT and hiking with him for 42 miles, earning the trail name "mama cluck". Since then, Heather has also thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, Florida's Ocean to Lake Trail, paddled the 99-mile Everglades Wilderness Waterway, and hiked 1,100 miles around the coastline of Florida while collecting 3 tons of plastic from the beaches.

Heather's most recent adventure of paddling nearly 400 miles of the Intracoastal Waterway was inspired by an idea she had when her parents moved south from her home state of Maine. After her father's death in 2022, she decided to fulfill her dream in remembrance of her father, and discover the healing properties of adventuring in nature.

  • Ep. 1005: Within Weakness - Revisited - Wesley Trimble

    Originally aired March 1, 2021.

Wesley was born with a mild form of cerebral palsy which affects his fine motor skills on the right side of his body. The only problem? He finds peace and joy climbing mountains and hiking trails in places that folks with cerebral palsy “aren’t supposed to go”.

He couldn’t let that stop him. His love for the outdoors has led him to climb every mountain in Colorado over 14,000 ft (54 of them), thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail (2,653 miles) from Mexico to Canada, and has ultimately led to a career in the outdoors.

  • Ep. 1004: The Ohio Project - Alison Alsup

Alison was born and raised in Ohio and recently graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art. She wanted to do something epic to celebrate the milestone and take a deep look into the place she loved; her home state of Ohio.

The Ohio Project was born. Alsup proceeded to traversed 3,416 miles by foot, bike, and rollerblades focused on seeing as much of Ohio as possible. She bikepacked 850 miles along the entire length of the Ohio River, thru hiked the 1,444 mile Buckeye Trail, bikepacked 796 miles around the entire perimeter of Lake Erie, and then did a bike/rollerblade combo of 326 mile Ohio to Erie Trail from Cleveland to Cincinnati.

Alsup is currently working on a body of artwork about the beauty of the Ohio Region, and its natural wonder, historical importance, and the kindness of its residents. She will be showing her art in exhibitions and festivals, and selling her work on her website. She hopes her project will spread appreciation for Ohio, encouraging its natural protection, and for residents to explore their own backyards.

  • Ep. 1003: Thru-Hiking the Arizona Trail - Revisited - Jacob “Valhalla” Myers

    Originally aired Sept. 6, 2021.

Read about Jacob’s recent attempt to ski to the South Pole: https://outdoors.com/almost-history-inside-a-failed-polar-expedition/

Jacob Myers thru-hiked the Arizona Trail early this year and is joining us today to tell us all about it! Not only was the desert vastly different from the lush, rainforest-like Appalachian Mountains he grew up in, but it was one of the driest summers on record in Arizona, making the adjustment even more challenging. He dealt with sun poisoning, lack of water, and extreme heat.

His next adventure will be quite literally on the opposite end of the spectrum...crossing glaciers in Norway.

  • Ep. 1000: Shifting From Global to Local Adventures - Alastair Humphreys

Alastair Humphreys is a British adventurer and author who famously spent over 4 years cycling round the world, a journey of 46,000 miles through 60 countries and 5 continents. This was followed by a walk across India, rowing across the Atlantic Ocean, running six marathons through the Sahara desert, a crossing of Iceland, busking through Spain and an expedition in the Arctic.

Despite these massive adventures, Alastair is most famous for coining the concept of “microadventures” which earned him National Geographic Adventurer of the Year and numerous awards for his book of that name. The whole point of microadventures is that you do not need much time, money or specialized gear. A microadventure can be anything that feels fresh, new and challenging for you. This was the subject of our last conversation with Alastair back in 2019. You can listen to that here

Today we’re talking about taking the concept of microadventures to a whole new level.

Most recently Alastair has spent a whole year exploring the land within 10 kilometers of his home. Every week, he would pick a new place within that range to explore and camp. The change and perspective shift that he experiences through this adventure has caused a massive shift in his outlook, which we’ll get into today.

  • Ep. 999: The Colorado 14ers Thru-Hike - Revisited - Junaid Dawud

    Originally aired July 15, 2015

As if climbing a typical 14,000 ft mountain isn't enough of an accomplishment, Junaid and his buddy,  successfully summited every one of the 58 Colorado 14ers in a single continuous hike. The journey was about 1,300 miles with a total elevation gain close to 300,000 feet. They hiked desolate Forest Service roads, class 5 traverses, many sections of the Colorado and Continental Divide Trail, as well as cross-country travel. It's an epic adventure to say the least!

  • Bonus Episode: Lake Okeechobee Crossing Recap

Hey y’all! This is new for me, a recap of a personal adventure.

Although this trip was NOTHING compared to what some of our guests have done, it was a fun micro-adventure that got way more press and attention than I thought it would.

My good friend, Jordon, and I set out on New Year's Eve to be the first people (we know of) to paddle across the largest lake in Florida, Lake Okeechobee. The route was a straight shot from North to South for 35 miles, taking just under 12 hours.

Also, if you don’t have months off work and life to do something fun, take it from me, 11.5 hours is plenty of time to get all the same fulfillment and soul-filling adventure!

Thank you to Bluefin SUP for helping sponsor the trip! Check out their very high-quality paddlebaords at a great price at: https://bluefinsupboards.us/
